A Novel Methodology to Assimilate Sub-Path Flows in Bi-Level OD Matrix Estimation Process

Traditional bi-level origin-destination (OD) matrix estimation process adjusts the (at upper level) based on deviation between observed and simulated traffic counts. The problem is mathematically under-determined, quality of solution can be enhanced by restricting level search space with information from other sources. This paper presents a methodology that assimilates sub-path flows in objective function. contributions study are two-fold: first, it proposes idea “structural comparison flows” to relax requirement “known” penetration rate vehicles’ trajectories; second, an innovative formulation where structural difference assigned integrated traditional deviations link flows. estimated advanced data sources such as Bluetooth MAC scanner. proposed tested using simulation realistic network Brisbane, Australia results indicate its practical relevance for situations when trajectories generally unknown. method has better ability maintain consistency showed considerable improvements OD estimates compared counts-based approach.
